Kath Williams was introduced to the value of green building strategies and technologies as project chief for Montana State University's EPICenter project. The EPICenter was a LEED Version 1 pilot project and the lessons learned from the EPICenter formed the basis for KW+A's approach and the establishment of guiding principles for all subsequent projects.
In 2001 Kath was named as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Sustainability. She contributed to the development of GreenStar, the green building rating system in Australia. Later that year, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) tapped her as a green building specialist. She contributed to the development and formation of the India Green Building Council and is frequently welcomed "home" there as a keynote speaker for their annual Congress.
The design and construction team for the first LEED-Platinum building outside of the USA was supported by Kath as LEED-AP. The Green Business Centre in Hyderabad was named the 2009 Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Award. Since that time, KW+A has continued to provide ongoing support and LEED training for projects across India. View our projects.
Service and volunteerism is a hallmark of KW+A. Kath served as vice chair of the U.S. Green Building Council for seven of its formative years. She went on to be USGBC's representative to World Green Building Council (WGBC) where she was twice-elected vice chair of the board and president. Her passion for developing country councils saw Taiwan GBC and Emirates GBC join the WGBC on her watch with Brazil and Mexico closely following.
Green schools started to gain national prominence in the early 2000s and KW+A has brought information and opportunities to schools in Montana, Ohio, India, and Taiwan. The importance of this focus, particularly for the future of our children and their children, makes this work essential.
In 2006, KW+A expanded green services to include residential projects. Homebuilders with vision, commitment, and the highest standards have found value added in LEED for Homes certification, provided by KW+A
KW+A knows the importance of operations and maintenance as the real long-term key to sustainability. Kath served as a LEED-Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) faculty member and recently KW+A team were primary content providers for the "Green Guide for Operations and Maintenance for U.S. Embassies and Consulates," commissioned by the U.S. Department of State Overseas Building Operations (OBO). In collaboration with progressive facility managers, KW+A develops customized O&M guides for buildings, institutions, manufacturing plants, and schools.
KW+A was pleased to support the development of the Yellowstone Business Partnership's sustainable development standard, The Greater Yellowstone Framework. Developed by a team of regional volunteers, the framework outlines intents, requirements, strategies and technologies for appropriate development of small to large projects in the 25 counties surrounding Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. KW+A is a proud member of the Yellowstone Business Partnership.
Since 2009, KW+A has been honored to be government-certified as a Woman Business Entreprise (WBE). She is currently a faculty member, teaching Global Sustainability, for Boston Architectural College (www.the-bac.edu/green)

| | Elizabeth Davis Green Associate -- Intern
With a growing interest in the interrelationship between sustainability, the environment, and the impact of LEED certified buildings, Elizabeth became accredited as a LEED Green Associate during the summer of 2010.
