Spring of 2019 Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center (MHFC) at Montanta State University in Bozeman, MT suffered the loss of three primary gymnasium spaces which were damaged beyond repair when the roofs collapsed under a heavy snow load. No one was injured during this middle-of-the-night structural failure, but the functional and program impact of losing this space was significant.
Following necessary forensic work, the impacted areas at the Fitness Center were cleaned up and the area around it made safe. Temporary replacement facilities (air supported structures creating multiple gymnasium replacement courts) were immediately commissioned, procured and opened. Approximately five months later following selected renovation the remaining portions of the Fitness Center were reopened for use.
Fall of 2019 MSU enlisted a design team to begin the process of develop a new vision for MHFC the Welcome Center. The purpose of the project is to create a best-of-class fitness and wellness facility to serve MSU into the year 2040 and beyond. In this facility MSU seeks to capitalize on every opportunity to create new program offerings and expand existing relationship that align with the contemporary needs of today’s students, staff and faculty. The facility should pave a path for fitness, wellness, recreation, instructional and research spaces, now and in the future. This is an exciting undertaking, and the benefits of this facility can well serve the entire campus community for many years to come.
To create this robust Wellness Center MSU chose to assemble many departments from across campus, bringing them together to collectively create this best-of-class facility. The project and Departments will create a building that has Assembly and Business occupancies as defined by the International Building Code. Each of these departments brings unique focus and a collaborative spirit to campus wellness. The partners involved in the planning and operation come from different parts of the campus. The spaces each require are outlined in detail in this Programmatic Book. Each department brings specific and important contributions to the development of the Program and eventual operation of the Wellness Center.
