The Haynes Administration Building Rehabilitation project is just that--a loving, restoration of a neglected structure that has served Yellowstone National Park in many functions. The National Park Service, with the financial support of Xanterra Parks and Resorts, is bringing the strategically-located building into being fully functional in support of Xanterra's role as park concessionaire. This building will house the corporate office and the reservation call center, all within an easy walk from the employees' homes/lodging.
Aspects of the project that have been particularly challenging include 1.) finding the balance between historic, reusable structural and interior components while upgrading the damaged materials. Damage came from water, rodents, older materials choices, storage, and lack of maintenance/operations within the structure. 2.) Coupling the schedule and resources of this project with the remodeling and refurbishing project of the current Xanterra offices and call center back into serving the original historic intent as Mammoth Hotel. 3.) The entire area of Mammoth Hot Springs, the headquarters for Yellowstone National Park, is geologically and thermally active region in the park. This attracts abundant wildlife as well as tourists. Construction, while keeping the area in full operation at prime time, requires sensitivity, planning, coordination, and communication in order to integrate phases of the project and full compliance with NPS, Xanterra's Ecologix program, and LEED.
